INTERVIEW WITH JORDI MONFORT: «WE ARE WORKING TO ACHIEVE GREATER INTERNATIONAL PROJECTION OF SPANISH CHICKEN AND CONSOLIDATE THE NATIONAL».
Magazine Poultry farming In this issue, we analyze the challenges of the poultry sector when it comes to developing our full export potential of high-quality birds, as well as our role as one of the main associations of the livestock sector in Spain. All this through this interview with Jordi Montfort, General Secretary of Propollo since January 2020.
As this publication highlights, we are at a key moment, where in addition to the consequences of COVID19 for our sector and the measures we must take to alleviate its effects, we address the search for greater international projection, access to new markets and increasing the share of those we already have.
According to the data collected, the FAO predicts that poultry meat will be the most consumed in the world in 2050, which is a great opportunity to position ourselves in the international market with a product of the highest quality.
Although the future forecasts were optimistic, the situation right now is critical since the sector has been seriously affected by the COVID19 crisis. The suspension of tourism has caused a collapse in HORECA channel sales that could exceed 600M euros in losses. For this reason, at Propollo we have sent a request to the Government and the EU for support to companies and professionals in the sector.
At Propollo we also highlight the evolution of the sector in recent years, especially in those issues related to animal welfare. The sensitivity of companies and consumers to this issue is increasing and currently in Spain we have very strict action protocols. We can say that we are one of the sectors most committed to this issue.
Another of the changes that we are implementing from the association is to give priority to highlighting the advantages of poultry production, the importance of establishing the rural population of Spain and the economic and social values that companies in the sector offer to society. The Coronavirus crisis has also led us to bring the sector closer to the population and the media, showing the stories behind this important but unknown product.
