THIS IS NOT A STEAK! International initiative «ceci n'est pas un steak»
From the Propollo poultry association we join the international initiative "ceci n'est pas un steak" that fights against improper use in meat denominations
Hamburger, sausage, steak... in recent years the emergence of vegetarian or vegan products that use meat names. The group of European farmers and ranchers recognize and accept the increase in demand for products of plant origin, but without agreeing with the use of these meat names that can confuse consumers on issues of, for example, nutritional equivalences.
Currently, there is a big debate in the European Parliament about the names of meat, in which the industry specializing in imitation plant products is lobbying to be allowed to use this nomenclature. Although the exact date on which the chamber will vote on this amendment is not yet known, the latest information indicates that it will take place between October 19 and 23.
Given this situation, and with the aim of raising awareness among MEPs about the importance of protecting meat denominations, from COPA-COGECA have prepared, together with partners from the livestock sector, the "ceci n'est pas un steak" campaign, in which Magritte's famous painting "The Treachery of Images" is used to illustrate the fact that just because something is seen the same or have a similar shape, does not mean that it is the same.
At Propollo we join this initiative that we consider to be of vital importance for the protection of consumers and respect for the work of ranchers. In the words of our general secretary, Jordi Montfort: “The food industry has the obligation to be as clear as possible in the naming and labeling of products, with the aim of avoiding possible errors or misunderstandings by consumers.”.
