Madrid, June 4, 2025The Spanish Interprofessional Poultry Meat Association (AVIANZA) held its annual conference yesterday in Madrid with a packed program that brought together key industry representatives to take stock, reflect on current challenges, and, at the end, toast the future of the Spanish poultry sector.
The day started with the AVIANZA General Assembly, which brought together members of the interprofessional association, which represents more than 961 companies, farmers, and professionals linked to the sector. This meeting addressed the main pillars of growth in the poultry meat sector in Spain and other international markets, the need to strengthen outreach and communication projects for consumers to highlight local products, their quality, sustainability, and animal welfare, and highlighted one of the major milestones of the year: the opening of the Chinese market to Spanish poultry meat exports. This progress, the result of intense joint efforts between the Spanish government, led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, along with the private sector and other entities and administrations, represents a strategic step to strengthen the internationalization of the sector and position Spain in one of the most important markets worldwide.
The AVIANZA General Assembly was also the venue chosen by the China Meat Association to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between both organizations, which allows them to begin cooperation following the historic opening of the Chinese market to Spanish poultry meat thanks to the new protocol signed on April 28 by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, and the Vice Minister of Customs of China, Weihong Lyu. The virtual signature was signed by Jordi Montfort, Secretary General of Avianza, and Chen Wei, Vice President and Secretary General of the China Meat Association. Also present at the event was Bo Shi, CMA commercial representative, as well as representatives of the Chinese Embassy in Spain as guarantors of the agreement.
Both Josep Solé, President of AVIANZA, and Jordi Montfort, Secretary General, were able to give members firsthand accounts of the Spanish delegation's recent prospecting trip to China, which aimed to strengthen commercial, logistical, and technical ties between the two countries. "The opening of the Chinese market and the signing of the memorandum of understanding with the CMA represents a collective victory and recognition of the serious and constant work of the Spanish poultry sector. But we don't stop there: this is just the beginning of a new era in which we aim to continue leading, innovating, and defending the value of our products globally, and for which we need to be more united than ever as a sector and as a country," stated President Josep Solé.
AVIANZA SUMMIT 2025
During the afternoon, the El Beatriz Auditorium (Madrid) was the stage for the Avianza Summit 2025, a space for dialogue and analysis on the current challenges facing the poultry industry. The meeting began with a presentation by science communicator José M. Mulet, who explained how misinformation and hoaxes can negatively impact the reputation and operations of companies in the sector.
Next, Carlos Carnero, senior advisor at Vinces Consulting and former MEP, offered an overview of geopolitics and the global economic context, providing key insights into the international environment facing the agri-food sector.
One of the afternoon's highlights was the roundtable on sustainability, which discussed the role of the poultry sector in building a healthy and responsible food system. Key speakers included Mauricio García de Quevedo (FIAB), Inés Grenho Ajuda (Eurogroup for Animals), Pedro Gallardo (PP), and María Luisa Faneca (PSOE), moderated by journalist Pilar Velasco.
TRADITIONAL POULTRY BARBECUE AS THE FINISHING TOUCH
As a festive closing, AVIANZA held its traditional poultry barbecue This event kicks off summer and promotes the consumption of poultry during the summer season. Attendees, including journalists from the gastronomy, lifestyle, food, and meat industries, as well as prominent figures from the poultry sector and institutional representatives, were able to enjoy a tasting of national poultry products in a relaxed atmosphere in the gardens of the Bancal restaurant.
